Located in the province of A Coruña, the city of Santiago de Compostela is located between the Monte da Pedra and the Monte Viso, surrounded by the Sar and Sarela tributaries.  It is the capital of Galicia, the headquarters for the archdiocese, the university district and the region’s administration, in adition to being one of the main cultural centres of the country.  The area occupies 220 km2 and has a population of 100.000 inhabitants.

Santiago of Compostela is 260m above sea level and is circumscribed by the original forts of Saint Susana, Sionlla, Meixonfrío, San Marcos and mount Viso.  Reference points are the Pico Sacro (Sacred Peak) the Monte da Pedra and the Viso Peak as well as the banks of the Sara nd the Sarela rivers.  The County has twenty nine parishes, all of them boasting individual and typical Galician scenery.

Weather is variable and there are frequent showers and fog in the valleys during the winter thanks to the region’s humid weather.  Santiago is know as the city where “rain is art”.
